But it’s also important for allies who have had the privilege of seeing themselves in mainstream film to see other people’s stories. “Media is uniquely positioned to be both entertaining and a creative force for democracy,” said Julia Himberg, associate professor of film and media studies at Arizona State University. “That means that even if we’re just looking for entertainment, seeing the lives of other people whose identity is not our own broadens our perspective on our culture.”
