Sudbury’s $ 7 million MRI fundraiser for Health Sciences North has been completed successfully and ahead of schedule.
The Health Sciences North (HSN) Foundation announced in a press release Tuesday that a “generous $ 2.25 million gift from the Mississauga-based FDC Foundation” had been made to “Unlock the Potential” HSN fundraiser to successfully complete the purchase of a new 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) model and upgrade the existing MRI scanner at the HSN.
“Reaching this exciting milestone in the campaign means patients across northeastern Ontario can soon look forward to shorter waiting times for high-quality MRI scans and faster diagnosis,” said the HSN Foundation.
The gift from the FDC Foundation brings the Unlock the Potential MRI campaign – a joint fundraising initiative of the HSN Foundation, the NEO Kids Foundation and the Northern Cancer Foundation – to an early and critical point, the foundation said.
The only MRI at HSN is already up and running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and keeping up with patient needs is still a challenge. The inclusion of the second MRI by the end of the year will increase the capacity of ongoing operations – and allow patients to approach the provincial target time of 28 days, while the current average waiting time for some patients on HSN is 84 days or more, said the publication.

The new 3 Tesla MRI model for HSN offers superior imaging capabilities, improved patient experience and faster scan times. It is said to be operated by highly skilled technicians to create detailed images of the brain, soft tissues, bones, and virtually all other internal body structures.
The foundation said MRI scans are an integral part of many medical specialties, including neurology, cancer, pediatrics, orthopedics, women’s health, and cardiology.
This is Dr. Heidi Schmidt, Head and Medical Director of Medical Imaging and Radiologist at the HSN, is important.
“Thanks to the FDC Foundation, we will be able to deliver high quality imaging in a timely manner to ensure that all patients get the care they need, when they need it,” said Dr. Schmidt.
“A second MRI with enhanced capabilities will help reduce waiting times, achieve high-quality results, and improve the overall patient experience.”
It was also welcome news for Hospital President and CEO Dominic Giroux.
“We are very pleased to be able to acquire a second MRI with the support of generous donors such as the FDC Foundation, together with our community partners and the three foundations,” said Giroux.
“We thank the FDC Foundation for their significant gift that will support the health of patients in northeastern Ontario for many years to come.”
The hospital also released a statement from the FDC Foundation recognizing the vast area in northeastern Ontario served by HSN.
“We’re excited to bring advanced MRI technology to patients across the Northeast,” the statement said.
“Waiting or traveling for an MRI can often be stressful for patients and their loved ones. We are excited to know that patients will have easier access to high quality diagnostic imaging to ultimately improve patient outcomes. “
HSN said construction of the new MRI suite began in March 2021 and the entire project will be completed later this year. The total cost of the new MRI, upgrades to the existing scanner, construction and installation is approximately $ 7 million.
