But to get the most out of life (and to help others) you need to take care of yourself too. Ob / Gyn Edward Chien, MD, MBA, shares six health and wellness principles that should be followed now and in the future for big personal payouts.
1. Exercise regularly
Staying in shape isn’t just about maintaining a healthy weight. Exercise improves your health, helps you sleep better, and lifts your mood.
“It also makes everyday activities easier, from lifting a toddler to tying shoes to walking down an airport terminal to catch a flight,” says Dr. Chien.
You don’t have to throw huge tires or run a marathon (unless you love it!) To be fit. Exercise 150 minutes a week (think 30 minutes a day for five days). Do a mix of palpitations and muscle building exercises.
2. Create healthy eating habits
Trendy diets come and go, some healthier than others. However, it makes most sense to choose a healthy eating pattern that you can stick to over the long term.
Consider the Mediterranean Diet or the DASH Diet, both heart-healthy diets. Or, talk to your doctor about the best diet for your specific health goals.
3. Get a good night’s sleep
You may never be a morning person, but a good night’s sleep can help you feel fitter and think clearer. It is also important for good health. Sleeping soundly lowers the risk of getting sick or developing serious illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease.
Adults need seven to nine hours of sleep a night. But many factors can stand in the way of falling asleep or staying asleep, such as night worries or even staring at a screen (hello, phone scrolling) just before bed. Create a sleep routine to help you get back on track.
4. Manage stress
“Stress is a normal part of life, so figuring out how to deal with it is important to relieve tension that builds up during the day,” says Dr. Chien. Learn how to combat burnout and frustration in a way that works for you.
Stress relief is often referred to as self-care and comes in a variety of forms, from meditation or yoga to beauty rituals, exercise, or a hobby. Think about what will help you relax and how you can prioritize it, even if it’s only for a few minutes a day.
5. See your gynecologist
Protecting your sexual health is important at every stage of life. You may need help figuring out which birth control method is right for you or helping to resolve a low sex drive. You may be wondering if your periods are normal or what you can do to help you get pregnant. And there are so many questions about menopause, such as how it affects your mood, weight, hair, and skin.
Your friends may have some great tips, but the most trusted source of information is your gynecologist. Make sure to voice your concerns and ask questions during your investigation. “Don’t be embarrassed, no matter what the topic – doctors have already heard everything,” promises Dr. Chien.
You don’t need a Pap test (screening for cervical cancer) every year, but your visit may include pelvic and breast exams.
6. Plan controls
Regular checks are essential to stay healthy. It gives you the opportunity to ask questions. And it gives your doctor a chance to spot problems early on when they’re easier to treat. Some women have a physical exam every year, others wait a couple of years – ask your doctor how often you should go.
Your GP will also recommend checkups based on your age and family history. These tests can detect early-stage diseases such as breast cancer, osteoporosis, and colon cancer. Don’t skip them – a health check-up could save your life!
“Making your wellbeing a priority isn’t selfish, it’s smart,” says Dr. Chien. Maintaining control over your health is essential to leading the life you want – whatever it looks like for you.
