These homemade gummies are delicious – and sugar-free!
Reduce sugar? Good with you! Making sure your child doesn’t eat sweet treats every day is a good step in developing healthy eating habits. However, sometimes your child deserves something tasty (but junk-free). The kids won’t even know that these gummies and donut bites aren’t filled with sugar.
Homemade gummy bears
These gluten-free, fat-free, and refined sugar-free gummies are not only delicious, but good for you too! Even better, your kids can help you make them. Here’s how:
* Makes about 40
ingredients
- 3 tbsp granulated gelatin
- 3 tablespoons water
- 1 cup of 100% fruit juice of your choice
- 3 tbsp honey or xylitol
method
- Mix gelatin and water and set aside for five minutes to bloom.
- Microwave the juice for about two minutes until it’s hot but not boiling. Stir in the gelatin mixture and honey or xylitol until dissolved. Cool to room temperature.
- Grease 40 x 10 ml silicone chocolate molds lightly with cooking spray and place on baking sheets, then spoon in the mixture. Chill for about an hour until it is firm. Squeeze and enjoy!
Useful tips
- Silicone chocolate molds are available at bakery stores and leading retailers.
- If you don’t have chocolate molds, line a baking dish with baking paper and grease it with cooking spray.
- Pour in the mass and, after cooling, cut into squares.
- We used orange, cherry and red grape juices. For lighter colors, add a drop of food coloring. Clear apple or white grape juice can also be colored with food coloring.
Homemade donut bites
These donut bites are perfect for little hands to roll and taste delicious!
* Makes about 24
ingredients
For the donuts
- ½ cup of whole wheat flour
- 2 tbsp xylitol
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- pinch of salt
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- Pinch of bicarbonate soda
- ½ teaspoon vanilla essence
- 1 egg white
- ½ tbsp applesauce
- 1/3 cup low-fat milk
For the glaze
- 2 tbsp low-fat milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla essence
- 1 cup of xylitol powder
- Food coloring of your choice
method
- Preheat the oven to 160 ° C. Grease a mini donut pan (with 4.5 cm holes) with cooking spray. Mix the flour, xylitol, cinnamon, salt, baking powder and baking soda in a bowl.
- Beat the remaining ingredients together. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ones and pour 5 ml of batter into each prepared hole and distribute it.
- Bake for about 10 minutes, until just cooked – a toothpick inserted into one of the donuts should come out clean. Let cool in the pan for five minutes. Unscrew it to loosen it. Wipe the pan clean and grease it again. Repeat with the rest.
- For the glaze, stir together the milk, vanilla and xylitol until smooth. Divide into two to three bowls and color each with a few drops of food coloring of your choice. Dip the tops, each with a cooled donut, in the glaze and shake off the excess. Set aside on a refrigerated shelf while you proceed with the rest.
Best tips
- Xylitol powder is available from Woolworths and selected health food stores. You can also make xylitol yourself by blending xylitol in a spice blender until it is powdery.
- If the icing is too thick to dip, add a few more drops of milk. If it’s too thin to coat, add extra xylitol powder.
