The venerable writer Virginia Woolf wrote in her extensive essay A Room Of One’s Own: “There is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set on the freedom of my mind.” Perhaps these words echoed in Regina’s head “Gina” Kline when she set out to found Smart Job LLC. A former civil rights attorney, Gina served as senior counsel in the office of the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), providing legal and policy advice on efforts to implement the Americans with Disabilities Act and Olmstead v. LC’s mandate for community integration in areas ranging from employment to education and health care. During this time, she realized that justice and fairness for people with disabilities are not exclusively the domain of government policy and justice, but rather the idea of work as a path to greater freedom by closing the disability wealth gap through more robust capital investment that the Redefine the workforce and create a more inclusive global economy for all.
Upon launching Smart Job LLC, Gina realized that ESG and impact investing must be part of the lingua franca of disability and the economy and a linchpin in redefining the vision of the future of work. Much like the Rise of The Rest fund from AOL’s co-founder Steve Case, who recognized that great entrepreneurial talent and investment opportunities could come from places other than traditional tech hubs like Boston, New York or Silicon Valley, Smart Job LLC understands that it is a human engagement is -centered approach to make workplaces “smarter” they can formulate a roadmap for more success. By highlighting areas of impact, including upskilling and retraining as accelerators and incubators for investment in work-related technology, by offering seed funding to underrepresented founders, Smart Job LLC is creating a mechanism for the change that will shape the digital economy of the 21st century can.
Smart Job LLC recognizes that change requires an expansion of ideas when it comes to defining the traditional models of disability-related employment strategies that have been exposed by policies and government programs of diversity and inclusion initiatives from Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 -Companies. While no one denies the need for these initiatives, Smart Job LLC has explicitly understood the importance of looking beyond the present and taking a creative approach to what is possible and appreciating that tomorrow’s business ecosystem is constantly growing and those with disabilities can play a central role in shaping their future.
From expanding the talent pool to funding solutions for people with disabilities, to supporting innovative work technologies in this time of transition, Smart Job LLC believes that impact investing not only reduces the wealth gap in the disability community, but also has a lasting impact on investing as a whole World. It underscores the fact that the millions of people with disabilities not only have something to contribute, but are also essential to how we think about innovation. As we enter a vaccinated world, the business world is at a crossroads. They need to find new ways to think not only about the world of work, but also how to get involved in the importance of culture and infrastructure to ensure greater flexibility in harnessing innovative business opportunities. It is time to reconsider the role of the disability community in impact investing and the potential power it has in this new era of corporate culture.
As I sit here and write this article, I need to be completely transparent as I am not only a spectator of the efforts of Smart Job LLC, but a board member as well. The vision the organization has wasn’t something I could sit on the sidelines for. Gina Kline and her team foresee something that I certainly share and understand that the future lies in the fact that there is a deep connection between the lived experience of disability and innovation that can ultimately change the world for the better, if only the resources to do so .
