If You Do Something You Love, People and Money Will Find You, According to This Entrepreneur

A conversation with Ryan Blaser, CEO and Co-Founder of Test My Home, about what drives great business.

Who are you and what is your business?

I’m Ryan Blaser, the CEO and Co-Founder of Test My Home. We are building biologists who draw on the principles of the latest environmental science to provide a full range of environmental auditing services. We carry out scientific measurements using the latest advanced technology to identify toxic levels in the built environment that can have adverse health effects. Ultimately, we help people create healthy living environments to improve their overall health and quality of life, and in some cases our jobs can be lifesaving.

What was your inspiration for this product?

I have been studying environmental sciences and electrical engineering for over 25 years. But it wasn’t until I started struggling with my own health that I realized something was wrong. I didn’t get a good night’s sleep, felt sluggish to get through the day, and didn’t seem to understand why my health was deteriorating. I had seen a lot of overwhelming data and research that led me to more extensive research and analysis regarding the chemicals we used, water, air, mold, EMF, and everything around me. I started testing all of my family and friends’ homes, and in the process I discovered many problems that were negatively affecting their health and productivity. I began to discover that many people were missing a key component to their overall health, a non-toxic environment! Having health is a right everyone should be able to enjoy! So Test My Home was born and we started gradually improving people’s health. Since then we have worked across the country including the homes of many influencers and celebrities.

What was your biggest challenge during the pandemic and how did you move to overcome it?

When home stay orders first went into effect, we initially saw a decline in business, but we used the pandemic as an opportunity to educate people about their health and surroundings in order to promote strong immunity to the virus . People who were originally at work and school all day have now been home all day! We got calls from customers who got sick from being home so often. Her home, haven, and safety made her sick. So we went to their homes and tested and found the source of the problem, helped them fix the problem, and people got better. So overall, the pandemic offered people an opportunity to become more aware of their home environment and the importance of good health. Test My Home has seen tremendous growth due to the pandemic and is expanding and training new technicians to keep up with demand.

What advice would you give to entrepreneurs looking for funding?

I believe in making money follow one’s passion. When you do something really well that you love, people and money will find you. Everyone is in a rush to get money while they should instead focus on doing their job really well. When you get paid to do something you love, your work no longer becomes a job and it becomes very rewarding to be paid to do it. Teddy Roosevelt once said, “Do whatever you can with whatever you have, wherever you are.” Focus on that and money will find you.

What does the word “entrepreneur” mean to you?

An entrepreneur believes in his product or service with passion and obsession. You take the relentless measures necessary to weather the tough times.

What do many aspiring entrepreneurs think they need what they really don’t need?

I believe aspiring business owners think they’ll need a ton of money to get started and that’s just not true. Just start with what you have! Read the biographies of the most successful people in history and you will find that most of them built the best products in a basement or garage using the limited resources they had. Steve Jobs built Apple in their garage with a friend while attending college after selling a car to buy computer parts. Elon Musk worked day and night with his brother in a small studio office, where they also slept and showered in a YMCA. Sara Blakely, the creator of SPANX, cut her feet out of her tights, slipped them under her white pants and went to the party that led her to a billion-dollar fortune.

Is there a specific quote or saying that you use as personal motivation?

“Focus on helping one person and 10 of their friends will knock.” No one ever became anything until he helped another. Business isn’t just about building a money empire. It’s about helping our friends and family have better lives and the rest of what you want will follow.
