Using cancer expert information from Macmillan Cancer Support, Accord Healthcare is launching a new app for cancer patients – more relevant than ever during the COVID-19 pandemic

HARROW, England, June 14, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Accord Healthcare (Accord) today announced the launch of Unify Health, a new app for cancer patients undergoing treatment that includes expert data from Macmillan Cancer Support. This new resource was developed by experts from across the cancer community to assist and advise people on their physical and mental wellbeing during cancer treatment. The app can connect patients not only with local pharmacists in their area, but also with community pharmacists who have committed to becoming “Community Cancer Champions”.
Experts from the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, the world’s leading cancer center and educational institute, have helped create a practical, bite-sized training curriculum for community pharmacists who want to advocate community cancer care. The training offers advice on how to talk to and support cancer patients, especially when dealing with symptoms and worries.
Cancer treatment can be confusing as a range of advice and support is available from many different sources. This was only made worse during the COVID-19 pandemic as cancer patients may have felt the need to avoid healthcare facilities for fear of being at greater risk of exposure to the virus.
Unify Health aims to be an app that cancer patients and their caregivers, regardless of whether it is day or night, can always access cancer symptoms and side effects caused by its treatments. These side effects vary from person to person, but can include dry skin after radio or chemotherapy, insomnia, mouth and throat wounds, hair loss, nutritional needs, and nausea.
The story goes on
“The pandemic is having a huge impact on cancer care in the UK,” says Dany Bell, Strategic Advisor for Treatment, from Macmillan Cancer Support. “Now more than ever, it is necessary to develop measures that effectively support the management of symptoms and further reduce all barriers to safe access to advice on living with cancer in order to actually come into contact with a ‘real person’ – one Healthcare professionals dedicated to community cancer care who can also provide tailored advice specifically tailored to the needs of an individual patient.
“The limited access to hospitals and hands-on care during the pandemic has simply exacerbated the psychological distress of cancer patients over the past 12 months,” said Badri Wadawadigi, Head of Digital Health at Accord Healthcare. “If people can address their cancer with tailored but medically validated information, it could help reduce worry and also lead to better healthcare outcomes,” he continued.
While access to care has been impacted by COVID-19, the pandemic has seen greater adoption in the medical community of new digital approaches to reach all patients, not just those diagnosed with cancer. Family doctors and hospital counselors conduct remote consultations either by phone or video, and healthcare has accelerated new ways of interacting with patients.
Unify Health is an app for cancer patients and their carers and is available in both the Android and Apple app stores. You can download it for free from www.unifyhealth.app
