No One is Advocating Abortion, It is Women’s Choice

ZAGREB, June 24, 2021 – Croatian MEP Predrag Matić said on Wednesday that it was a lie that his sexual and reproductive health report, which will be put to the vote in the European Parliament on Thursday, endorses abortion.

“Nobody advocates abortion, especially not as a method of contraception,” said Matić during the plenary session of the European Parliament.

“The number of abortions in countries where abortion is allowed is the same as in countries where it is banned. It is only in these latter countries that it poses a risk to women’s health, as 23,000 women worldwide die from it every year, ”he added.

Matić presented his report and said that abortion is a very difficult decision for any woman, but that in the end, every woman must have a choice.

“Nobody denies doctors the right to refuse to provide a medical service for personal reasons, but at the same time the health facility must ensure a doctor who provides the requested service,” said Matić, adding that the resolution clearly states that health Welfare is the responsibility of the Member States.

Matić, a member of the Croatian Social Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Group in the European Parliament, said he had received “angry and disgusting” criticism and hundreds of hate emails about his report.

He said that if men vote for this non-legislative resolution, they will respect women’s rights and show women self-respect, while all Members of the European Parliament should show what kind of Europe they want.

Matić said opponents of the resolution are willing to ignore the parts of it that speak of improving women’s health only to focus on abortion with “incredible lies and manipulations”.

“Tomorrow is a great day for Europe and the entire advanced world. Tomorrow we will decide to position Europe as a community that chooses to live in the 21st or 17th century.

The report has been criticized by parties on the right of the political spectrum for calling abortion a human right, addressing conscientious objection as a problem and circumventing the powers of EU member states.

Croatian MEP Karlo Ressler (HDZ / EPP) said the resolution uses confusing language, equating conscientious objection to denial of medical care, while his colleague Tomislav Sokol said that by advocating gender-ideological sex education in the School used the competencies of the EU and tell member states what to teach in their own curricula.

“Matić probably wrote the report under the influence of foreign lobbies promoting abortion. This is because Matić gives an arbitrary definition of sexual and reproductive health in the report that is not based on international law, “Sokol said, calling for this on the controversial parts of the report to be voted separately.
