The Ontario government is providing more than $ 4.5 million to the Peterborough Regional Health Center to meet ongoing operational needs and support specific services during the coronavirus pandemic.
On Wednesday morning, Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith announced funding for the regional hospital as part of Ontario’s $ 760 million to help hospitals continue to respond to the pandemic and an additional $ 300 million to reduce surgical backlogs
The funding is in addition to the province’s $ 5.2 million announced in November 2020 to expand hospital bed capacity.

“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, our focus remains on hallway health care,” said Smith.
“Increased operational budgets and strategic investments continue to accompany our transformative reforms to the delivery of healthcare in Ontario. One person receiving medical attention in a hallway is one too many. We will continue our efforts to end corridor medicine by placing the patient at the center of care. “

Brenda Weir, Executive Vice President and Chief Nursing Executive of the hospital, thanked Smith and Ontario Secretary of Health Christine Elliott for providing “much-needed” support for the centre’s dual role as community hospital and regional center for the surrounding communities.
“As Ontario’s healthcare sector continues to face challenging and uncertain times for the months and years to come, continued support from the province will be critical to ensuring that we are positioned for continued success as we serve the patients and families we serve, provide excellent care, ”she said.

With the 2021-22 Hospital Allocations, the Ontario government will provide each hospital with an increase in its operating budget and targeted funding for key priorities. The initiatives include:

- Funding to recognize growth in the hospital sector, as well as targeted funding for key ministry priorities
- additional funding for priority services in eligible hospitals to cover rising volumes related to cancer, kidney, heart, neuro and stroke, as well as hip and knee surgery and MRI scans
- Funding from Ontario Health-Cancer Care Ontario for cancer and kidney care services in hospitals
- Financing of eight hospitals to cover rental costs in connection with external dialysis units and to align financing responsibilities for all community-based external dialysis units
