Funding to support mental health and physical activity programs
TORONTO, June 28, 2021 / CNW / – Sun Life announces one $ 825,000 Donate over three years to the Foundation for Black Communities. This funding will support black-run nonprofits and charities that support black communities around the world Canada. Many of these community-based organizations face barriers to funding because they are not registered charities.
Sun Life’s donation is directed towards these priority initiatives:
- Mental health programs that teach adolescents coping skills and resilience.
- Exercise programs for teenagers that promote a healthy and active lifestyle. One of the areas this supports is diabetes prevention.
These areas are primary concerns for black communities in Canada, according to the Foundation for Black Communities. They align with Sun Life’s focus on helping all Canadians lead healthier lives. Underrepresented communities see greater risk of diabetes and mental health problems. Funding black-led community organizations that address these health inequalities will support lasting, sustainable change.
“Our communities thrive when they are just. We know black communities are having a greater impact as a result of the pandemic, while at the same time historically underserved, “said Jacques Goulet, President, Sun Life Canada. “This donation will enable black-led community organizations to access the resources they need to create change. In doing so, Sun Life builds diverse and equitable communities.”
The Foundation for Black Communities is Canada first black-run, black-mandated philanthropic foundation. It exists to ensure that every black person is in Canada to thrive and shape their own future.
You will invest in black-run, black-serving organizations that serve black communities around the world Canada Access to support in building a healthy lifestyle.
“Black communities and community organizations are chronically underfunded. As this partnership begins to address underinvestment, it also represents a new approach to philanthropy that recognizes the black communities’ ability to act in steering and determining where that investment should go, ”said Lebanon Abokor, Member of the working group of the Foundation for Black Communities. “The Sun Life donation will have a real and meaningful impact across the country. As the first insurer in Canada to register, we look forward to your support. “
