How to Make the Perfect Margarita

It’s summer and margaritas are calling. You can taste that, right? That refreshing lip taste of citrus fruits and softer – oh, so softer – tequila – and a touch of salt. When you close your eyes, you can even feel a hint of a summer barbecue afternoon. Your mouth is watering now, right?

But! Before you whip out your pitcher and start tossing together what you think is the perfect margin, it’s best to read what Vianney Rodriguez has to say.

Rodriguez is co-author of Latin Twist: Traditional and Modern Cocktails and host of Tex-Mex Queen on YouTube’s Identity Network. So yeah, she knows a thing or two about how to make the perfect margarita.

Rodriguez isn’t a bartender or mixologist either, which means she doesn’t rely on fancy bartending tools. This means that your recipes and tips can be implemented in any kitchen.

So while our goal is to build a home bar for bougie entertainment purposes, don’t worry if you’re not there already. You don’t need a cocktail shaker to make the best margarita ever. One simple DIY project will make you the next expert bartender: grab a mason jar and two lids, one with a couple of 1/4 inch holes. (Use a hammer and nail.) Add your ice cream and ingredients, shake with the tightly closed lid with no holes, switch to the lid with holes, and sift it off.

Roll up your sleeves, turn up the music, and let’s get down to the perfect margarita from scratch.

1. Go to the top shelf

You want a light, crispy tequila blanco that is 100 percent agave – not cut with corn syrup or sugar. Try Siembra Valles, which has an earthy taste, or Astral, which is a little more floral but works very well with lime juice. And for your Triple Sec you choose Cointreau, which hits exactly the right orange notes.

2. Salt the glass

Salt enhances the flavors of the other ingredients. Plus, it’s delicious in and of itself. Take a margarita glass, run a wedge of lime around the rim, then dip the rim in a plate with about 2 tablespoons of kosher salt flakes and distribute the salt evenly. Coconut, hibiscus, and lavender salts work wonders.

3. Throw away the jug

The best margaritas are so easy to make: grab your shaker (or mason jar), fill it with ice, and add 1 1/2 ounces of Tequila Blanco and 1 ounce of Cointreau. (A jigger has these measurements on each side, or you can do 2 tablespoons per ounce.) Add 1⁄2 ounce of fresh lime juice.

4. Really shake that thing

Bartenders go to town because thorough shaking not only cools the drink, but also combines the ingredients so the liquor doesn’t sit at the bottom of the glass. Shake the cocktail until the outside of the container is frosty, at least 20 seconds. The rest is simple: strain into a glass.
