“And there will be enough goat’s milk to feed you, to feed your household, and to feed your maids.” – Proverbs 27:27.

A healthy drink – milk, is the first food we eat when we are born. Breast milk is the ideal nutrition for babies in the first few months of life. Children are encouraged to finish their milk so that they can become “big and strong”. However, do we tend to drink this nutritious beverage, milk, as we get older? Should we still drink milk as adults?

For decades, scientific research has emphasized the importance of maintaining bone health in old age. In the course of our life our bones change constantly. So when our intake of calcium-rich foods is low, our bodies “steal” the calcium it needs from our bones – which can make them porous and weak. Bone diseases are widespread in Nigeria. Just as an example, according to data, more than 1.5 million cases of osteoporosis are diagnosed in Nigeria every year! Osteoporosis refers to a condition where the bones become weak and fragile, and bone loss occurs with no symptoms. As a result, most people are unaware of their deteriorating bone health.

The good news, however, is that drinking milk regularly can prevent osteoporosis, broken bones, and even help maintain a healthy weight. This delicious drink – milk, has always been a healthy drink as it is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and many other nutrients that are normally underconsumed by many people.

While milk is a good choice for many, some people cannot tolerate it because they cannot digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products (dairy products are products that contain or are made from milk). It is suggested that such people stick to unsweetened milk types to limit the amount of added sugar in their diet. Some examples of non-dairy milk alternatives are: soy milk, oat milk, almond milk, and more.

However, for those who can tolerate milk, consuming good quality milk and dairy products has been shown to have a number of health benefits. These include: –

1. Good for the bones: Milk is the most important food source of calcium and vitamin D for children and adults. Calcium is an essential nutrient for strong bones, muscle movement, and nerve signals. Vitamin D increases the body’s ability to absorb calcium. Sunlight is an excellent source of vitamin D. Other sources of vitamin D include: eggs, salmon, mushrooms, fortified milk, and some yogurts.
2. Helps build strong teeth: Milk strengthens our teeth because it contains a high proportion of calcium. Lactose also helps prevent tooth decay and tooth decay.
3. Promotes Muscle Health: Drinking milk is associated with a lower risk of age-related muscle breakdown. Several studies have also shown that drinking milk after a workout can reduce muscle damage, promote muscle repair, increase strength, and reduce muscle soreness.
4. Rich in Protein: Your body needs proteins that can help with cell repair and boost a person’s immunity.
5. Promotes Heart Health: The potassium in milk can help with heart health. Consuming more potassium while reducing your sodium (salt) intake can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
6. Reduces depression: A quote from a Nischita Nibedita says: “A glass of MILK a day keeps black thoughts away.” Yes, a sufficient vitamin D level in milk supports the production of serotonin, a hormone that people with mood, Link appetite and sleep. Manufacturers often add vitamin D to cow’s milk and plant milk. So this can help reduce depression.
7. Promotes the metabolism: Milk stimulates the metabolism and keeps you full longer.
8. Reduces the risk of obesity: Whole milk can be added to your diet. With its high protein content, it can curb your cravings for junk food for a long time, which will aid you in your fat burning fitness strategy.
9. Fights Multiple Diseases: Researchers have found that milk helps prevent many diseases, including some cancers.
10. Stress booster: Milk calms muscles and nerves and has a calming effect on you.
11. Prevents Heartburn: There are many foods that are acidic and can cause heartburn. Milk has a calming effect that covers the stomach lining and esophagus to cause heartburn.
12. Good for your skin: Milk makes your skin look young, soft and radiant. This is because it contains retinol, a well-known antiaging and skin restoring antioxidant. The vitamin D in Plus milk is also an anti-aging vitamin thanks to its anti-inflammatory effects and protection from ultraviolet rays.

Now that we know that milk has a myriad of benefits, how much milk should we be consuming on a daily basis? There is no hard and fast rule, but too much of something is not advisable. For adults, two full glasses of milk a day – once in the morning and once before bed – provide a sufficient amount of nutrients. For children under the age of 12, two 250ml glasses of milk per day should be sufficient. And of course, babies need regular milk intake as it is their only source of nutrients. It’s also good to know that milk has healthy varieties that we can benefit from. It is recommended to choose low-fat or non-fat milk, whole milk or skimmed milk.

The price of milk and other dairy products has increased along with other food products in the market, mainly due to the current inflationary trend in Nigeria. In conclusion, I would like to use this medium to propose / appeal to the various dairy manufacturers in Nigeria to lower the prices of their milk and other dairy products so that many more people can afford to buy more and enjoy this rich, nutritious one on a regular basis and delicious super drink.
