Dani Burt Reveals The Stay-Healthy Routines She Swears By

Most people feel successful after a cup of coffee in the morning. But by the time she gets to work, Dani Burt has already spent hours riding the waves on the beach near her home in California. The 36-year-old world champion in adaptive surfing makes a point of honing her sport every morning, and that requires careful planning.

“I just want to be efficient and get out,” says Burt. That means she uses hacks like making her coffee the night before, eating out and even showering on the beach with a special kit she has in her car. (More on that later!)

Burt, who lost her right leg above the knee in a motorcycle accident in 2004, first has to put on her walking leg in the AM and later swap it for a specially designed adaptive surf leg on the beach. “It looks like a peg leg that’s in an athletic stance,” says Burt, noting that at the beginning there was no such thing as a surf prosthesis. “I just wanted to run in the water and get up,” she says. After using “some old bits” from a prosthesis that Burt and a friend no longer used, Burt and a friend created the perfect fit. Now she says: “The surf leg is definitely one of my favorite legs.”

After surfing, Burt swaps legs again and races through the day at an impressive pace. But her daily surfing is only part of what makes Burt a champion. She eats well, works 10-hour shifts at a hospital where she works as a physical therapy doctor, and makes a point of stretching regularly.

She also works hard to stay well hydrated. “Hydration is definitely key for me,” says Burt. “My lifestyle – working 10 hours a day in the hospital and surfing the web – is physically demanding. When I’m not hydrated, I get tired, have a headache, and my mood changes. So that I can do what I really love, I have to be aware of it. ”(Spoiler: She is a fan of Smartwater +.) Check out her wellness-themed daily routine below – it can only inspire you to incorporate more healthy habits into your own everyday life.

5 a.m.: wake up and hit the waves

Burt works four days a week, but whether on duty or not, she likes to be on the beach to surf “with the first light”. Why? “Before the rest of society wakes up, it’s quiet,” says Burt. In addition, in the morning “the water looks like a pane of glass that makes the surf better and more pleasant,” she says.

Burt’s alarm clock rings at 5 a.m. on weekdays. She puts on her walking leg, gets ready, feeds her cat and gets a cup of coffee that she made the night before, along with a Perfect Nutrition bar. She is out the door and is on her way to the beach within 15 minutes of waking up. Burt nibbles at her bar on the way to the surf, which is about 10 minutes from her house. “I don’t want to eat too heavy before surfing,” she explains.

During the crossing, she also sips Smartwater + Renew, which is fortified with dandelion and lemon extract. “The refreshing combination of flavors makes it easy to stay hydrated,” she says. “If I drink enough in the morning, my body can perform at its best – especially when I have challenging surf to deal with.”

Once on the beach, Burt puts on her wetsuit and surf leg – and then goes on the water for a few hours.

8:00 a.m .: Change of outfit on the beach

Burt has to be at work by 8:30 am, so she leaves the water at 8:00 am. Once outside, she moves quickly.

“I definitely want to do the dishes before I go to work,” says Burt, so she gets a flush kit (basically a travel shower) out of her car and sprays it and some biodegradable soap on herself. Then she puts on her scrubs and switches from her surfing leg to her walking leg. “I’ll be ready to go within 15 minutes,” she says. When she’s hungry she has another bar, along with more Smartwater + Renew.

Burt is busy during her work day. “I treat patients who are there for everything from elective surgery to trauma, cancer treatments and COVID-19,” she says. “Patients in the hospital are connected to many lines and machines, which completely limits the general mobilization ability. If you don’t mobilize, you lose this power incredibly quickly. “

When she has a moment, lunch usually consists of “some kind of stir-fry and rice” with chicken or tofu that she cooked over the weekend. “I prepare stir-fries and vegetables to make salads … I want a colorful meal with as many vegetables as possible,” says Burt.

Burt likes to pair her lunch with Smartwater + Clarity, which is fortified with ginseng and green tea extracts. “I feel like it gives my step extra momentum,” she says. “I don’t know if it’s hydrated or what, but it helps me sit back and get back on the loop with renewed energy.”

7:00 p.m .: stretching and dinner

Burt leaves work around 7:00 am, by which time she is ready for a few stretches and a quick dinner. “My work is really physical,” she explains. “After work, I need to relax, stretch, and be ready for the next day.” After her motorcycle accident in 2004, Burt says she “didn’t even recognize her body” or “didn’t know how to use it”. Stretching “really balanced me out,” she says. And as a physical therapist, Burt says she likes to practice what she preaches. So she focuses on stretching her calf, glutes, quadriceps, and hamstrings on her left leg. “I want to be able to expand my healthy side to prevent injury, relieve pain, and really get myself to the level I want to perform,” she says.

For dinner, she usually eats a soup or stew that she has pre-cooked over the weekend. Like their lunches, Burt’s dinners are rich in vegetables and easy to throw together. “I want dinner to be ready so I can eat and get on with my night,” she says. Then she takes a shower and drinks Smartwater + Tranquility with ashwagandha and mandarin extract. “Switching off, relieving stress and providing moisture, these are all important parts of my evening routine,” she says. “I’ve definitely had a busy day and just want to re-focus, calm down, go to sleep … and then do it all over again.”
