Healthy West Chicago, West Chicago library offer summer wellness programming

Good nutrition is the key to good mental and physical health. Not only does a healthy lifestyle promote well-being, studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have shown that eating healthy foods helps children grow and develop properly and reduce their risk of developing chronic diseases, including obesity. Research also shows that adults who eat healthily live longer and have a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

If you’re struggling to find healthy recipes that the whole family will enjoy, visit Chef Maria at Healthy West Chicago for a fun, live virtual cooking class for the whole family from home. Participants learn tips on healthy eating, time savings in the kitchen and ways to involve children in the preparation of dishes. Head chef Maria will show healthy, family-approved recipes in each course.

Through a partnership with the West Chicago Library District, the following programs are offered:

• Virtual cooking courses on selected Wednesdays from 6pm to 7pm

Recipe ingredients will be made available to the first 25 registered participants for the cooking classes. There will be a designated time when attendees can pick up the materials in the West Chicago Library District.

On July 21 there is tabbouleh with flatbread and spicy bean dip. Register at bit.ly/2QnaQ7b

On August 18th the recipe is called sweet potato nachos with homemade salsa. Register at bit.ly/3s3GtjT

• Virtual cooking demos on selected Wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm

Recipe ingredients will be provided but the food will not be provided as these courses are virtual and can be followed along with the chef.

Southwest Turkey burger and sweet potato fries are on July 28th. Register at bit.ly/3cOelLx.

On August 25th, the recipe will be grilled chicken with strawberry pineapple salsa. Register at bit.ly/3r4oQPG

• Virtual Family Cooking Club on Monday, July 26th to August 17th, from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm

The lessons offered are aimed at children ages 7-12. The first 25 families registered for this cooking club will receive recipe meal packages. There will be a designated time for parents to collect the supplies for the club from the West Chicago Library, which includes ingredients for 4 meals, a child safety knife, cutting board, and apron. Register at bit.ly/3h0d0F5.
