Southeastern Ontario health-care centre to share patient records

Six hospital organizations in southeastern Ontario, including the Kingston Health Sciences Center, have signed an agreement with Cerner Corporation to implement a common health information system that includes electronic health records.

Other area hospital organizations that share information about Cerner include Brockville General Hospital; Lennox and Addington County General Hospital at Napanee; Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital; and Providence Care and Quinte Health Care in Belleville.

Once the new system is implemented over the next three years, the regional system backed by Cerner Millennium will replace paper-based records and provide a single source of health information and clinical tools from individuals that will help health care workers coordinate and ensure safe, Ensure quality care across the region, says a press release from the Kingston Health Sciences Center.

Currently, people’s health information resides in many different systems that are not interconnected, the press release said.

“When people are cared for by multiple healthcare providers and facilities in the area, they are often expected to track and share their own complex medical information and often have to repeat tests because healthcare providers have not been able to easily access information about the patient elsewhere.” , it says in the message.

“We will work closely with our health partners in the Southeast to advance this important project,” Dr. Michael Fitzpatrick, member of the regional health information system steering committee and chief of staff, vice president of medical affairs at Kingston Health Sciences Center, said in a statement. “Therefore, we will closely examine our clinical processes and procedures and find innovative ways to standardize our practices across departments and health organizations to ensure that we support the safest, highest quality care.”

“The involvement of patients and healthcare providers in this project has been incredibly valuable to date, and their continued involvement will help us ensure we are building an integrated system that addresses the unique health needs of families in our area,” said Brenda Carter, director of Quality and Clinical Transformation and also a member of the Kingston Health Sciences Center’s Regional Health Information Systems Steering Committee.

Throughout the selection process and well into the planning of the system transformation, it was clear that the hospitals involved, the regional Ontario Health Teams and Cerner share the vision of connected, patient-centered care, ”said Jim Shave, President of Cerner Canada.

“We look forward to welcoming the Southeastern team to the collaborative group of Cerner customers who are advancing healthcare through the effective use of technology and data.”

Community members experienced in accessing health care in southeastern Ontario have and will continue to work with health care providers to implement the regional health information system to ensure that it meets the unique needs of people in our region, the press release said.
