How HR Practices, Priorities Are Shifting Post Pandemic for Health Care Organizations

As COVID-19 continues to have a major impact on strategies for managing staff turnover and promoting employee retention, the role of the human resources (HR) departments will be of significant importance in achieving these goals with appropriate recruiting, hiring and personnel policies and practices To bring harmony.

Given the return to a more stabilized business environment that is now growing nationwide, what strategies will remain or will grow in the near future?

According to the recent Healthcare Insights survey conducted by Accurate Background, technology usage for recruiting, hiring and onboarding increased by 60% during the pandemic, a trend that is expected to remain at this new level.

The survey found that from November 2020 through January 2021, 240 U.S. health care organizations were surveyed via email, with 58% of respondents being HR professionals and 30% being talent acquisition. The survey found that 70% have video interviews integrated into their hiring process and 74% plan to do so in the future, a significant increase from the 29% of organizations that used video interviews prior to the pandemic.

In addition, the researchers said that use of I-9 electronic services is expected to increase 40% from pre-pandemic use, along with electronic filing of candidate documents for background screening, which is expected to increase 36%. In light of this increasing technological shift, the researchers note that organizations should consider the need for more integrated tech stacks and IT staff / experts to advance data protection and strengthen cybersecurity.

“The healthcare landscape has never been more dynamic and complex than ever as the demand for skilled workers across the industry continues to fluctuate in response to the pandemic,” Karen Moore, director of healthcare, Accurate Background, said in a statement. “We conducted our Healthcare Insights survey to better understand how HR and recruiting professionals have realigned their teams and practices in the wake of COVID-19.”

In response to the pandemic, 49% of respondents implemented strategic workforce planning, a preventive strategy to measure and manage changes in workforce needs according to the organization’s overall goals. Another 32% were working on the strategy and 19% said they did not have such a plan yet.

41% of respondents said they were concerned about planning uncertain staffing levels, 82% of companies have begun to train their employees across the board to fill gaps, and 71% are planning to use temporary staff. When it came to meeting staffing needs, health organizations sourced talent primarily from other states (61%), followed by other industries (55%) and overseas (24%).

“We are encouraged to find evidence that healthcare HR departments are playing a more important role in advancing their organization’s business goals, and the majority are using technology in new ways to streamline recruiting, hiring and onboarding practices.”
