WILLIAMSBURG – On Monday, June 7, 2021, the Williamsburg Health Foundation (WHF) Board of Trustees approved 22 grants valued at nearly $ 3.5 million.
As part of the foundation’s strategic goal of “Targeting Behavioral and Social Risk Factors That Affect People’s Health Throughout Lifespan,” WHF invested more than $ 1.5 million in this initiative.
In partnership with Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Public Schools, WHF uses its School Health Initiative Program (SHIP) to connect teachers, students, parents and other community partners with information to build lifelong, healthy habits across the system. The program has been in place since 2005 and has served as a model for other systems across the Commonwealth.
One focus of SHIP is promoting healthy eating and active living. Examples include after-school programs such as Challenge Clubs for running, cooking and playing football. In addition, the initiative organizes “trial days” in cafeterias, where students can try local agricultural products. Students are also trained on nutrition and encouraging standing and moving around the classroom.
“Although we really appreciate our partnership with the schools to reach the majority of the students in the WJCC [Public] During school we know that the home is the most important place for child development and that early childhood is the most critical moment in that development, ”said Carol L. Sale, President and CEO of WHF.
WHF also focuses on “Two Generation Services” that promote family wellbeing by working side by side with adults and children. Two Generation Services grants include full support for child development resources and program-specific funding for child health initiatives in the City of Williamsburg and James City Counties.
The foundation has also made strides in supporting healthy aging. Grants falling into this category are used to support medical transportation for elderly residents and to fund the Aging and Disability Resource Center in Williamsburg.
The largest part of the funds from this wave of grants flows into the WHF goal “Strengthening the safety network in the health system for uninsured and underinsured people”. This would include advanced primary care, behavioral health services and access to medicines.
“We have given grants in each of these areas,” Sale said. “Problems such as access to prescription drugs continue to be a challenge for uninsured or underinsured people.”
The third strategic objective is to “advance organizations, systems and public policies that are critical to the health and well-being of the community”. The Greater Williamsburg HEARTSafe Alliance received a grant that fell into this category.
