JUSTIN Thompson’s Mr. Perfect barbecues are slowly attracting attention in Ballarat. On the first Sunday of each month, Mr. Thompson heats up the Barbie near the North Gardens for discussion – not so much about the hooks, as general wellbeing. The free bratwurst is one of around 40 across Australia that men of all ages can visit for a chat. Mr. Perfect barbecues are an opportunity to find more information to help with a range of men’s health problems, from gambling to depression – or just for friendly company. Ballarat host Thompson was preparing its second event on Sunday which was postponed for a week due to COVID-19 restrictions but proved a timely entry into National Men’s Health Week. Mr. Thompson, who works in Geelong, heard from a colleague about the grassroots charity and thought it was a great way to give back to your community. He called some friends and started cooking. “Neither of us are psychiatrists, but we can create and support a positive environment – and nobody loves anything more than a free barbecue,” Thompson said. “The biggest problem we have is when people see it on social media, from the comfort of their own home, they show their interest, but it’s hard to really get out of your comfort zone that day.” IN OTHER NEWS Mr. Thompson encourages men to get out with a buddy. Mr Perfect events that started in New South Wales are encouraging small group numbers to ensure guests feel more comfortable and involved. Ballarat’s Mr. Perfect barbecue started last month.
