A new Shang Chi trailer is out, which means it’s time to scour each shot for clues as to what’s to come. The film will accompany Shang-Chi (played by Simu Liu) as he leaves the Ten Rings organization, but ultimately has to return and face his past. A new Heavy Spoilers YouTube video highlights character sightings and plot details that you might have missed at first sight.
At the beginning of the trailer, we see five of the ten rings that look more like bracelets than the actual rings from the comics. But hey, they can’t be too similar to Infinity Stones, can they? Originally, the Ten Rings each had different abilities to impart to the wearer, but they could be more dragon-tied in the movie, so it doesn’t look like Marvel is creating the same story as their final phase.
Another shot shows a navy blue ten-ring flag that has appeared in previous MCU films, including the Iron Man films. These films also referred to Mandarin, a martial arts super villain who holds the Ten Rings. Mandarin is not only one of the antagonists of Shang-Chi, but also Shang-Chi’s father, whom he will have to fight if the Ten Ring Organization pulls him back in.
Shang-Chi’s mother, Jiang Nan, also appears in the trailer and appears to be teaching him how to control the elements. The movie’s conflict will likely stem from Shang-Chi, who struggles between his mother’s and father’s wishes. While his mother may want him to avoid the life of an assassin, Shang-Chi’s father wants him to be the heir to his organization. In the comics, Shang-Chi is generally not a meta-human, but if he can control elements without the rings, it looks like Marvel is leading there in their MCU adaptation.
Now for all the fights. One of the locations seen in the trailer is filled with neon lights and a battle ring. Also, in footage from an earlier trailer, viewers saw what looked like a sign in the background that reminded them of John Walker. Heavy Spoilers doesn’t see it as a shield, but as a flag to a specific location. It is possible that this is Madripoor, a fictional Asian country that many criminals call home. Madripoor also appears in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and would be the perfect place for viewers to see Shang-Chi’s fights in action before the final battle. In one scene from the location, Shang-Chi battles his estranged sister Xialing, who may team up with him to defeat her father.
A few other characters that appear are Death Dealer, Mandarin’s right-hand man, and Wong, a superhero who appears alongside Doctor Strange. Wong can be seen in the trailer battling Abomination, a Hulk-like villain who appeared in The Incredible Hulk (played by Tim Roth) in 2008 and is also set to appear in the upcoming Disney + series She-Hulk.
Of course, nothing is confirmed until Shang-Chi comes out in September. Until then, viewers will have to keep speculating and see if the upcoming Black Widow will have any clues about the film.
