‘Murph’, a five-part WOD consisting of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 bodyweight squats, and another one-mile run, is one of CrossFit’s most famous benchmark hero workouts. Named after the fallen Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, ‘Murph’ is usually tackled by CrossFit communities around the world on Memorial Day in the US and, usually with a 20 pound (10 kg) vest, for a grueling session.
To raise funds for Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, student Sam Gladding decided to re-shoot the WOD by trying as many Murphs as possible within 24 hours. Here’s what he had in store:
For a while, with a 10 kg vest
- 1 mile run
- 100 pull-ups
- 200 pushups
- 300 squats
- 1 mile run
“Health and fitness have always been a big part of my life,” Gladding told BOXROX after completing the challenge. “During the national lockdown in May / June 2020, I did a 30 Murphs in 30 Days challenge, this piqued my interest in CrossFit and I started adding it to my training program.”
With his interest piqued, Gladding decided to run a Murph challenge to raise money for the Starship Children’s Hospital, where his sister Sienna was being admitted to treat leukemia. “They not only give Sienna the best of care, love and support, but the whole family, and offer medical treatment that is second to none,” said Gladding.

Gladding started his challenge at 6am and wanted to break the current record of French athlete Tanguy Cruz, who ticked 18 murphs in 24 hours. “The hardest part was definitely 12 hours,” Gladding explained to BOXROX. “I did 11 murphs without a break because I felt strong, but then I took my first break. I hit a massive wall, vomited twice and just couldn’t move. Every sip of water or bite came right back up so I couldn’t stay hydrated or refuel. I drained completely from Murph 12-15. “
Doubt was beginning to creep into my head, but I had to push it aside and go to a place in my head that I had never been before. The rest was just a blur, but I somehow managed to complete the rest of the Murphs and get the world record. “
After 22 hours, Gladding finished a total of 19 Murphs, beating Cruz ‘record by a full workout, and ending at 4:27 a.m. the following Saturday morning.
“I think that just proves to anyone who wants to push themselves that their body is capable of so much if you put your mind in the right place.
