When they didn’t hear anything after the second early bird education, the Harlowe, Ontario. The couple was excited to support the Pembroke Regional Hospital Foundation’s Cancer Care Campaign as family members have been affected by cancer. It did so until they were surprised by a call from PRHF fundraising specialist Leigh Costello to inform them that they had won the grand prize of a Princecraft 2021 pontoon boat from RG Dick Plummer.

“That was a big bonus, we weren’t expecting that,” said Leo, who has supported other hospital lotteries in the past. “Like any lottery, when you buy tickets that you never expect to win.”

The Dunphys received their award on June 29 and already had plans for the maiden voyage on the new boat on June 30 on Lake Kashwakamak with their son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. They live about 10 minutes from three major lakes near them and look forward to exploring this summer.

“Our family and friends can’t wait to get on the boat,” said Leo, who added that his son, who lives in Horton Township, kindly offered to keep the boat at his house, but Dad said no.

Audrey is also looking forward to getting her 92-year-old mother out on the water.

The Spring Lotto for Healthcare is PRHF’s third major online fundraiser since the pandemic began. It raised $ 228,375 for the hospital’s Cancer Care Campaign, which has raised roughly $ 800,000 for the $ 1.65 million goal since it started in January, according to Roger Martin, executive director of PRHF.

The Cancer Care Campaign will fund the expansion and modernization of the PRH chemotherapy unit so that fewer people have to make the trip to Ottawa and have their treatment closer to home, noted Costello.

“We were blown away by how people got a boat as the grand prize. it was very well received, ”she said. “Definitely this lottery exceeded expectations and we will likely do it again so stay tuned.”

While Martin doesn’t know exactly what will be up for grabs at the next lottery, he hinted that it would likely be something of high demand and scarce supply to encourage people to buy tickets and support the hospital.

He added that while the COVID times have been devastating for many in terms of fundraising, the community has been very supportive of the Spring Lotto, Auto Lotto last fall, and two progressive Catch the Ace lotteries. There are also plans for a third Catch the Ace lottery as the foundation has just filed its license application and is hoping to launch the Catch the Ace 3.0 later this summer.

In addition to the main prize draw, two early bird draws for the spring lottery were also held. The first was on May 18 for an Assante Wealth Management sponsored family bike package that Emily Malette won. The second drawing was on June 9th for a Can-AM DS90 Youth four-wheeler, sponsored by Ben Hokum and Sons and won by Paul Lair.

Costello noted that the lottery would not have been possible without the support of community sponsors – Perri-Rae Boell & Associates – The Co-operators, Dunbar Home Inspections, Petawawa Toyota, Smitty’s Home Hardware, Lindsey Cupelli of the Mortgage Advisors, Mulvihill Drug Mart and Chad cliché of professional drywall.
