Also known as belly fat, visceral fat is a complicated type of fat to lose because of the many mechanisms at work that can either aid or hinder visceral fat loss. A study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health further examined postprandial thermogenesis in high-protein, low-fat diets versus high-carbohydrate, low-fat diets.
The study states, “Recent literature suggests that a high-protein, low-fat diet promotes greater levels of weight loss compared to a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet, but the mechanism of this increased weight loss is unclear.
“This study compared the acute energy costs of meal-induced thermogenesis on a high-protein, low-fat diet to a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet.”
The study enrolled ten healthy, normal weight female participants, ages 19-22, who ate either a high-protein or a high-carbohydrate diet on a daily basis.
The study found that postprandial thermogenesis 2.5 hours after meal was on average about twice that of the high-protein diet compared to the high-carbohydrate diet, and the differences were significant after breakfast and dinner.
Postprandial thermogenesis is crucial when it comes to abdominal obesity and helps burn more belly fat.
The results concluded that additional energy costs are associated with high protein, low fat diets and may explain the effectiveness of such diets for losing belly fat.

Another study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition analyzed a high protein diet for reducing appetite, caloric intake, and body weight with changes in plasma levels of leptin and ghrelin.
An ad libitum low-carb diet decreases caloric intake and leads to weight loss, the study found.
It goes on to say: “It is unclear whether these effects are due to the reduced carbohydrate content of such diets or to the associated increase in protein intake.
“We tested the hypothesis that increasing the protein content while maintaining the carbohydrate content of the diet decreases body weight by decreasing appetite and the spontaneous intake of calories.”
The study found that increasing dietary protein from 15 percent to 30 percent of energy with a constant carbohydrate intake resulted in a sustained reduction in calorie intake at will, resulting in significant weight loss.
