New poll finds low public awareness of how to get enough vitamin D year-round

While vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, only half of people (51%) realize it’s important for bone health, and 43% have never thought about what it is, according to a recent survey of 2,000 people, according to a recent poll need to do to care for their bones Adults in the UK by YouGov and on behalf of the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS).

Rosemary said, “The benefits of getting enough vitamin D are enormous for bone health, as low levels can increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

“There is a small amount of vitamin D in some foods, but it is difficult to get enough vitamin D from food alone. Therefore, what we absorb from sunlight is vital. Food supplements can also be useful.

“We’ve all been indoors a lot more because of the pandemic, which means it’s more important than ever to think about whether we’re getting enough vitamin D.”

Unfortunately, the latest survey showed that fewer than four in ten (37%) people know that in the UK, vitamin D can only be obtained from sunlight between April and September.

Rosemary said, “From April through summer, we can get good amounts of vitamin D from sunlight. During these months, it is recommended that you expose your skin to direct sunlight for a short time for about 10 minutes once or twice a day. From late September to early April, however, we should all consider taking 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily, as we cannot absorb it from sunlight. “

While people may lack vitamin D from the sun during important times of the year, recent surveys have shown that 49% of people miss vitamin D even during the fall and winter months by not supplementing their intake.

There are around 3.5 million people with osteoporosis in the UK today, but there are things we can all do to help our bones stay strong. A healthy, balanced diet with sufficient calcium, weight bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise and, above all, an adequate intake of vitamin D are the key. “

A new initiative from the ROS has been developed to help people make good decisions for their bones when it comes to diet and lifestyle. Whenever consumers see the “Bone Health Approved” logo on a product or service, they can be assured that the charity’s experts believe the product is good for their bones.

These include products with vitamin D, such as the vitamin D drink Mango and Passion Fruit from health company Get More Vits. This drink was the first to be approved under the charity’s new program and offers consumers their daily dose of vitamin D.

Half of women and 20% of men over 50 break a bone due to osteoporosis – a condition that makes your bones weak and easier to break – so it’s never too early or too late to affect your bone health.
